1901: Al Baltz and the red fox

June 27, 1901

Peering over the dizzy height of Boileau's Rocks*, nearly 300 feet above the winding Tohickon, Al Baltz, of the Baltz Brewing Company, of Philadelphia, who was a guest at Point Pleasant Inn on Thursday, espied lying on a ledge projecting from the rocky precipice, a red fox.

In attempting to get closer that he might observe the animal, Mr. Baltz made a false step, and then began a thrilling experience few men have encountered and fewer still have survived.

Heading down the sheer precipice plunged the helpless man, jagged rocks and underbrush stripping away his clothing.

Grasping at bushes and roots Mr. Baltz finally caught a projecting limb and crawled upon this to the trunk of the tree, where he was rescued by ropes let down from above.

Remarkable to relate Mr. Baltz was not seriously injured, though scratched and bruised.
