V is for Very Cool

Carol Jacobs Norwood or Myerstown writes:
Rayna ... I find this recently-acquired postcard interesting! I think it must be from either Christmas 1944 or 1945. Look at how the Civil War monument in the center of town was decorated for Christmas and with a huge "V" in front! I'm sure it had something to do with WWII! Also, see the old courthouse in the background?

Carol rules. She's always sending me the best stuff. Thanks, Carol!

  1. My grandmother was actually stationed on top of the old courthouse during the war - as a lady marine. Not sure why exactly she was there though.

  2. Actually thats not the old Courthouse, there was a bank on that corner and it's pictured here. The court house was behind the bank.

  3. Anonymous, my father was stationed similarly during the beginning of the war and was there to identify planes overhead by make and model. This was reported to the government who made sure that they knew who was where and when. Elsewhere on this website is another shot of this bank from another angle (more straight on) and behind it you can see the unmistakeable spires that belonged to the old courthouse.

Mark - Thanks for setting me straight. I did not realize there was a bank in front of the courthouse. Sorry for the "bad" information!
