This eerily lovely photo ran in the Piece of History for May 6, though there was much I didn’t know about the photo. Since then, many readers have written to suggest it could be a Catholic May Day procession. These are special devotions held in the Catholic Church during the month of May, honoring the Virgin Mary as “the Queen of May.” The services often take place outside.
