The Fountainville Dunkards

This postcard shows the Dunkard Meeting House on Ferry Road in Fountainville, in a photo taken around 1900. The Dunkard Brethren is a small group of conservative German Baptists who withdrew from the larger Church of the Brethren. Historically, the church has taken a strong stance for nonresistance or pacifism. It is one of the three historic peace churches, the other two being the Mennonites and the Quakers. Some of the Dunkard Brethren exhibit the plainness of dress associated with the “Old Order” Brethren and Mennonites.

Fountainville, at the intersection of Ferry and Swamp roads, has the distinction of being situated in three separate townships — Doylestown, New Britain and Plumstead.
