The old McDonnell place, New Hope

I really like this photo I found in The Intelligencer archives — the old house seems so peaceful back there, alone in the trees. Taken by staff photographer Gian Luiso on Feb. 19, 1986, the picture was simply marked “McDonnell house, New Hope.”

After a bit of searching, I realized that today, the building serves as The Fox and Hound Bed and Breakfast at 246 W. Bridge St. According to the inn’s website, this house was built in 1840 and has been owned by only four families over its 170-year history. One past owner, Bernard McDonnell, a justice of the peace, has a room named after him.
