Solebury Township Historical Society barbecue

On August 30, 2009, I was lucky enough to be a guest at the annual Solebury Township Historical Society (STHS) picnic.

This year the barbecue was held at Rolling Green Farm, the gorgeous property of Dick Carlson. (The event tends to travel, depending on whoever is generous enough to host it.)

Located at the corner of Route 202 and Aquetong Road, the property is 10 acres total, 8-and-a-half of which are under crop. The land is preserved by the Heritage Conservancy and inspected once a year to ensure it meets Conservancy standards.

Sally Grant-Jagoe, president of STHS, addressed the crowd for a few minutes while we feasted, presenting Dick and Tim with the coveted STHS coverlet (a coveted coverlet?), thanking them for hosting the event.

Both the house and barn (recently restored by Spencer Saunders, who also runs the Phillips' Mill Photography Exhibition) were built around 1746 and owned, it seems, by the Paxson family for several generations.

Just before dusk, four men in khaki slacks and polo shirts played a lighthearted game of horseshoe. They cheerfully applauded each other, their good-natured calls of "Nice one!" and "Good!" echoing gently over the grass.
