Phantom itch

Subscriber Peter Moyer stopped by to share the July 1862 medical deferment that kept his great-grandfather from seeing action during the American Civil War. The deferment reads, “This is to certify that Henry W. Moyer is unable to perform military duty, on account of the top of the first phalanx of his finger. H.G. Groff, M.D., Harleysville.” (In other words, Henry was missing his trigger finger!)
